The term “super group” gets thrown around a lot in music criticism, but it’s a title that fits Wild Flag pretty damn well. A “super group” in the traditional sense, Wild Flag, composed of some of the best individual female rock musicians of the last few decades (notably Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney), also sound phenomenal as a group. The video for “Romance”, the lead single from their self-titled debut album which is out now on Merge Records, mirrors visually the tight, vibrant cohesion of the group’s sound. Like label-mates Superchunk, Wild Flag manages to keep fresh a sound that had its moment of glory 15 years ago. So watch them storm through downtown Portland while wearing animal and clown masks in this most assertive of debut music videos.
