Music Video Pick | “Turbulence” by Steve Aoki and Laid Back Luke ft. Lil Jon 0

Posted: April 13th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Blog, Freeform | Tags: , , , ,

I wish I had Lil Jon’s voice. He could totally turn a morgue into a dance party, just by yelling a few words really loudly with his Pimp Cup in hand. Add Steve Aoki, one of the hardest partying DJs on the scene today, and a clip from this year’s Ultra Music Festival in Miami, and you’ve got a music video that could make your conservative, 89-year-old grandmother from Kentucky shake her booty. Besides, Steve Aoki looks mighty fine in a flight attendant’s uniform. So if you need a quick reminder of your sanity, watch this week’s MVP after the jump.

Music Video Pick | “AMERICANARAMA” by Hollerado 0

Hollerado’s video for their single “AMERICANARAMA” went viral a few months ago, but that doesn’t make it any less visually interesting. Their creative use of “human 8-bit” has generated a lot of buzz, and many have compared them to OK Go, a band that is heralded for their off-kilter music videos (like the one of them on the treadmill). And if you don’t know what I mean by “human 8-bit,” then watch the clip after the jump. It’s a clever homage to the great American tradition of video games from a fun, upcoming Canadian band for this week’s MVP.

Music Video Pick | “Friday” by Rebecca Black 0

Posted: March 16th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Blog, Columns | Tags: , ,

Did you know that Friday comes after Thursday and before Saturday? Apparently Rebecca Black didn’t or, if she did, she just wanted to give us all a friendly reminder. In spite of the heavy Autotune, Black’s voice remains shrill and her attempts at Mariah-esque riffs are cringe-worthy. The lyrics are inane and the graphics in this video are, in a word, tacky. But let’s put production value and actual musicianship aside for a minute. Did anyone else notice that Rebecca’s friend – who is “cruising so fast” on the highway with her – has braces? Braces!! All I know is that she should not be cruising in the back of a convertible. What are her parents thinking? If you haven’t seen this newest YouTube sensation, take some time to party, party, party on a Friday with Rebecca Black on this week’s Music Video Pick. But be forewarned; you may have to look away in discomfort and pain.

Music Video Pick | “Blow” by Ke$ha 0

Ke$ha looks surprisingly clean in her video for her newest single “Blow.” In fact, for a moment, I even forgot that this is the girl who brushed her teeth with “a bottle of Jack.” But in spite of this new-found hygiene, Ke$ha’s video still manages to stay in the realm of the absurd. And in her world, the absurd includes making out with a unicorn in a tuxedo and hitting on that guy from “Dawson’s Creek.” Watch it for yourself after the jump on this week’s MVP – Music Video Pick. CD Review | “All Day” by Girl Talk 0

Girl Talk came out with All Day on Monday, November 15, and the Internet shut down. All of Girl Talks albums are offered online for a free download, but his website is still struggling to keep up with the high demand; as of this morning, there were still difficulties in downloading the newest album, but procuring a copy is worth the wait and the online frustration.

In the Pursuit of Music | “3,000 LPs and Counting” 0

A constant source of contention between my parents stems from my father’s love of music memorabilia, and my mom sort of has a point. This is the man who has a three-foot square poster of R. Crumb’s artwork for Big Brother and the Holding Company’s ‘Cheap Thrills’ prominently placed above their bed. (I think my mom is most opposed to the image of Janis Joplin splayed out on a bed, nipples fully erect.) The most common debate in our household, however, has to do with my dad’s ever-expanding record collection. When you walk into our living room, you are greeted by bookcases teeming with vinyl, flanked by dozens of milk crates strategically placed to catch the spillover.

News Flash | The Beatles Are (Finally) on iTunes 0

Posted: November 16th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Blog, Freeform | Tags: , ,

If you haven’t noticed, the Beatles finally made an agreement with Apple, and as of Tuesday morning, you can now find their entire collection on iTunes. This band has been the biggest hold-out on the music download front, so their appearance on iTunes solidifies the shift in the music industry from physical records and CDs to digital music.

If you already have all of the Beatles’ music or just don’t want to spend $149.00 on the box set, you should still check out some of the features on iTunes. There a short four-minute video entitled “The Beatles Through the Years,” along with a full concert video from their performance “Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964.”

Concert Review | Pretty Lights at House of Blues on 11/5/2010 0

I always find it a little nerve-racking to go to a concert and see nothing but two laptops and a drum set onstage. For some reason, I find it hard to believe that those are the only tools necessary to entertain an audience, least of all a sold-out crowd at Boston’s House of Blues. Pretty Lights, however, are masters of this art form and more than kept their fans happy at their show on November 5.

Concert Review | Passion Pit at Carzo Cage 0

There is only one true measure of an event’s success at Tufts, and that gauge is sweat. At Tufts, the sweatier, the better, and Passion Pit’s show on Tuesday, October 26 turned the Cage into a veritable sauna.
