Tonight kicks off the first of 6 nights of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble! Have you heard about this? As simply as I can put it – it’s a week-long local music fest disguised as a contest that will get you interested, engaged and screaming your lungs out for some of the finest bands that rock the city of Boston. Several bands have played live here on WMFO and we couldn’t be happier for their chance to rock the Rumble. Check out excellent previews in the Big Media here, here and here.

We’re not going to delve into a lot of detail, because it’s starting in a few short hours! Here’s a GREAT excuse to wake up tomorrow exhausted, voiceless and exhilarated…and then do it again on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It happens at TT the Bear’s. Go early for the reception (starts at 8pm) and make a full evening of it. Every Rumble night you’ll see bands with their A game. Below is a quick and dirty overview and hopefully the push you need to get out the door.

Live in Boston | Sigur Rós 0

The stage is hidden by a white scrim on all four sides – the audience is restless. We’ve been waiting for almost an hour, expecting opening acts which never materialized.

Finally the lights go out – except for the ones onstage. The curtain becomes a screen, dizzying abstract shapes floating around as the music starts. Sigur Rós’ frontman, Jónsi Birgisson, begins with Yfirborð, immediately crashing his bow down on the guitar in his signature style. The curtain is still up, but now things are taking a distinctly different turn – the shapes are still barely intelligible, but there is the unmistakable feeling that we are witnessing art as they move, synchronized with the music. Circles and close-ups of iron filings and things moving in liquid mingle with definite human movement in a bizarre and beautiful dance.

April 1st may have passed and but there are always fools afoot. Here are some local music recommendations for those who want to get in April’s foolish spirit.

1. Mod Gun
Last year, Mod Gun released their album “Fools”. Gritty, unique punk rock with lyrics you actually want to listen to. This band has everything going for it. Download their releases from Bandcamp. While you’re there, check out their song Clover – perfect for your spring rock collection. Catch them live at O’Brien’s in Allston on April 17 or May 24th.

A Crash Course For The Ravers! featuring Three Toed Sloth! 0

Three Toed Sloth

Three Toed Sloth was founded in the early 90’s by musicians from The Upstarts and Lamas, all influenced by bands like Boston and the Rolling Stones.  The band, known for their great songwriting and their twist on cover songs, will be this week’s guest on A Crash Course for the Ravers.  They packed Northshore clubs for many years, gaining cult status in the area.  These days the band has Country rock in their blood. Don’t miss Three Toed Sloth on WMFO this Saturday at 1:00 pm.

Would You Like Some Music With Your Kitsch? 4

newbury

As a fan of local businesses and music stores, I would like to say that I am a consistent visitor of Newbury Comics.  I don’t always go there to browse the back catalogue or search for new artists, but I always make it my stop when I try to pick up new music in physical form.  The other day I found myself in the Faneuil Hall area and thought I’d pop into the Newbury Comics to pass some time.  What I found was simultaneously jarring, discouraging, and regretfully understandable.
