News Flash | The White Stripes Are Dead

Posted: February 3rd, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Blog, Freeform | Tags: , , ,

The White Stripes are officially over, according their official website. After over thirteen years of collaboration and great music, the dynamic duo is finally calling it quits. In their open letter to their fans, Jack and Meg explained that they were breaking up “mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.”

This break-up is not entirely unexpected given the band’s somewhat rocky history. In 2007, Meg White famously had an emotional breakdown, forcing the White Stripes to go on a hiatus and even pull out of a headlining performance at that year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival. Jack has also been becoming heavily involved with side projects such as the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather, which have been successful bands in their own right.

If any good can be pulled from this event, it is that “Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from The White Stripes.” This is something any White Stripes fan can look forward to, and they will hopefully be available sometime in the near future. Until then, we’ll have to console ourselves with any one of the six studio albums that they’ve left us with and, at Jack and Meg’s insistence, claim their music as our own since, “The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want.” Long live the White Stripes!
