Last week was a huge week for indie music releases, from Neon Indian to The Kooks, everyone seems to have decided that September 13th is the magic release date. That being said to kick off our “Pick of the Week” series we’re actually offering three picks….from last week.
1. Close Your Eyes and Count to Ten – Grouplove
This impossibly sunny group recently toured with Florence and the Machine which can only mean good things for Grouplove’s career. The last song on their new release, Never Trust a Happy Song, starts innocuously beachy but escalates swiftly to a joyful ruckus. The screams and howls from vocalists Christian Zucconi and Hannah Hooper give the song an edgy playfulness.
2. Cruel – St. Vincent
With a high profile album debut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and seemingly endless hype surrounding her third album, Strange Mercy, St. Vincent is the artist of the moment. Easily the catchiest of the album, “Cruel” combines an up-tempo beat and cheery guitar riffs with strange and slightly sinister lyrics. Singer, Annie Clark shows the full range of her voice starting warm and hazy before escalating to a beautiful clear and full sound on the chorus. Let “Cruel” be your entrée into Strange Mercy‘s eerie depths.
3. Flicker and Fail – Laura Marling
Upon the release Marling’s second album, I Speak Because I Can, James Reed wrote in the Boston Globe, “It is not hyperbole to say Marling is already one of the most important voices of her generation, even if most people probably will never even know one of her songs.” I don’t know what you can do with praise like that except get to know one of her songs. Off her third album, A Creature I Don’t Know, “Flicker and Fail” shows how Marling increasingly draws influence from her folk siren predecessors like Joni Mitchell. That being said her voice remains haunting and distinctive, her narratives wonderfully strange.
