New and Notable: THEESatisfaction, And That’s Your Time

Posted: October 20th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Blog | Tags: , ,

Seattle hip-hop duo THEESatisfaction has been slowly rising in popularity over the last few years. The duo made guest appearances on fellow label mates Shabazz Palaces’ album Black Up and have been contributing steadily to a new era of Northwest hip-hop. Recognizable by their spacey off-balance beats and quick, stream-of-consciousness rapping, THEESatisfaction has an incredibly unique sound.

Spotlight: Collaborative Creation ft. Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Posted: September 29th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Blog, Freeform | Tags: , , ,

At a freeform radio station like WMFO, we support all sorts of creative endeavors – large, small, and in-between. However, some stand out. Some people and organizations make headway in the creative world at astounding rates and experience astounding growth because of it. They’re cropping up more and more often of late, these meteoric rises, with companies like Netflix expanding their brand to include their own TV shows, indie bands like Young the Giant going from a Facebook page of 3000 likes and a few free songs floating around the internet to almost half a million likes on Facebook and an endlessly full tour schedule, and devices like the Kindle and iPhone making it easier to be a content creator than possibly ever before.

This ease of spread, however, comes with some pitfalls. More and more people are creating things, so competition to actually succeed is stiff and it can seem like many people are out of the running before they even begin. When there’s so much talent out there, we tend to devalue our own, even though the people who make the media that we are constantly inundated by had to start somewhere. With that in mind, what is it like to make something wildly successful from scratch, after all?

“Great,” according to Joseph Gordon-Levitt. “It feels great.”

Live in Boston | X Ambassadors

X Ambassadors may not be that well-known a band – yet – but they sure are a lively one to see in concert, especially at a small venue like Brighton Music Hall. With Sam Harris, a frontman who goes wild not only for the crowd, but with the crowd, they’re an enthusiastic bunch who seem happy to be on stage and have a polished sound for a band that’s officially only a couple years old. Unconsolable, their first single about growing up in Ithaca, NY, was clean and wonderfully performed; I walked out humming it under my breath. (more…)

Aziz Ansari is ready for his blurry phone photo (source)

Sunday night in Boston, comedian Aziz Ansari performed a benefit for the Boston Marathon bombing victims at The Wilbur Theater. Tickets for the show, announced only hours before they went on sale, sold out in five minutes. Ansari’s fans, hooked into social media, were ready to pounce at noon causing him to say that those in attendance Sunday frightened him a little. Ansari went on to stand still center stage encouraging everyone to take their photos of him before he started any jokes. Anyone who didn’t have a camera out proceeded to hold up their phone and snap away. Ansari remarked, “This is what I have to do now.” (more…)

New and Notable | “Bankrupt!” by Phoenix

Posted: April 24th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Blog

It’s about time time for a new trick by an old favorite.  After four long years of silence, the french alternative band Phoenix is finally out with their new album Bankrupt! Fortunately the ominous title does not refer to the band’s sound. Bankrupt! is an excellent fifth addition to Phoenix’s impressive discography and a worthy follow up to their critically acclaimed 2009 Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, (affectionately nicknamed WAP by fans).  The album garnered Phoenix significant international airplay and won them that year’s Grammy for Best Alternative Album. But Bankrupt! is a different animal; it both celebrates the musical style they’re known for, and travels places up and beyond.
